Welcome, and thank you for visiting The Prelude Practice.
My name is Emma Robotham-Tame and I am a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor, offering empathic and compassionate support to adults experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties. I believe that counselling provides a space in which we can explore current difficulties and past painful experiences, to find meaning and a way forward in our lives.
My practice and approach are non-judgmental and respectful of individual experience, and whether you are seeking clarity or change, or help during a difficult and painful time, I aim to support you.
My counselling experience includes working with childhood trauma, bereavement, anxiety and depression, habitual worry and obsession (OCD), relationship and family issues, coping with significant life changes, stress, and low self-esteem.

Making the decision to see a counsellor is a big step to take - but it can be a positive one. Please read on to find out more about how I could help you.
Life brings many challenges, and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. As a counsellor my role is to provide space and guidance to enable you to examine your life and make new, meaningful choices within it.
I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment, with someone from outside your day-to-day life. Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and perhaps a new understanding of yourself. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but empowering you to make your own changes.
Counselling can provide a safe and confidential space in which to bring issues that are causing emotional distress and confusion. When you come to counselling you are working alongside an empathic professional, who is skilled in supporting people through difficulties.
I am a trained psychotherapeutic counsellor in Transactional Analysis, a model of therapy that I believe offers people accessible ways to understand how their minds work. I offer both short and long-term counselling, tailored to what you might need. My practice is welcoming and I work with people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs.
I work with adults aged over 18 years on an individual basis, either face-to-face or online. I offer weekly sessions (more frequently on request) as this provides the best opportunity for a good therapeutic outcome. I offer face-to-face appointments at my counselling rooms either in Hove on Wednesdays, or in Haywards Heath Monday to Thursday. I also offer online counselling.
People come to me for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through counselling:
Feelings of stress or anxiety
Panic attacks
Relationship problems
Grief, loss or bereavement
Problems with addiction
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
Abuse
Depression
Problems with confidence or self-esteem
Anger management
Issues relating to sexuality
Difficulties at work or in retirement
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial session. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.
I am happy to discuss any queries or questions you may have prior to arranging an initial appointment and provide a free 15 minute telephone call to discuss these
All enquires are usually answered within 24 hours, and all contact is strictly confidential and uses secure phone and email services.
Counselling can help you if you are seeking support for specific issues or life events. It is often short-term work and is effective in providing symptomatic relief, and strategies for building resilience and making change. Therapy is deeper work, which aims to identify patterns to emotional responses and behaviour that contribute to a sense of internal conflict and unhappiness. It is generally considered longer-term work, but can be useful in short-term counselling work, too.
I don't specify a minimum number of sessions, as this depends on each individual and how they feel they are progressing. We will review our work together on a regular basis and when you feel it is time to end counselling, I'd request a week's notice so we can 'wrap up' the work.
My aim is to respond to new inquiries within a 48 hour period and to provide an initial session within two weeks of first making contact, depending on availability. When you first make contact, please let me know if you would like to meet in Haywards Heath or Hove and whether you would like daytime or evening appointments.
It is my intention that the contents of our work are kept private and confidential, unless confidentiality needs to be broken for safeguarding reasons, such as risk to yourself or others. This happens very rarely and then I will always try to speak to you about this first.
I am registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for the storage of personal information. Please feel free to ask me for further details if you have any questions.
I offer face-to-face counselling sessions from two locations in Hove and Haywards Heath. I also reach clients in the greater Sussex area.
I offer both short and long-term counselling, tailored to what you might need. Together, we can explore the issues you are experiencing in a calm and confidential space.
I provide weekly therapy sessions lasting 50 minutes, either face to face, or online, as I believe this provides the best opportunity for a good therapeutic outcome.
I offer an initial free 15 minute telephone consultation. Individual 50 minute sessions are £60. I offer a limited number of low-cost sessions.
